It’s absolutely true that all the parts of your garage door work one way or the other, but the part that receives the greatest tension is the springs. All the heavy lifting is up to these springs when the door operates. The breakage of these springs is one of the most annoying problems for homeowners, especially for them who don’t know what these springs exactly are.
There are lots of reasons when garage door track is out of alignment.Let’s discuss them one by one.
Wear and Tear
It’s the most common and most obvious reason for the failure of these springs. If the spring in your door is installed properly, it will work for about ten thousand cycles. Ten thousand may seem to be a great number but keep in your mind that the springs go through at least two cycles every day, one while opening and one while closing. So you can assume how long they can run. And there are many occasions when you have to open and close your garage for more than one time. This adds to the number of cycles. In case you have to operate the doors many times a day, you should go for high rated springs that may be a little costlier but will be great for your door.
Corrosion has always been an enemy of metals. If your springs develop any types of rust, they are not going to last as long as you expected. The lifespan of the springs is reduced considerably by corrosion. Such corrosion increase the friction and make the springs weaker. Lubricating the springs with WD-40 periodically can prevent them from developing corrosion. Lubricating them with a good quality lubricant every three or four months is quite enough. Make sure the lubricant is silicon based. These lubricants are best for garage doors and their parts. However, don’t use grease or oil for it. They attract lots of dust and dirt which can be very harmful for the door in a long run.
These springs have to bear lots of tensions daily, so they need regular maintenance. Good maintenance can obviously prolong the life of these springs. As mentioned earlier, keep the lubricating round the year is an important part of the maintenance. Checking the balance of the doors is yet another important part of it. If you find the doors imbalanced, you need to call a reputed garage door spring repair expert.
Use of Just a Single Torsion Spring
Usually, these doors come with two torsion springs, one on each side. It makes it easier to lift the door. But some underhanded builders and manufacturers use one extra-long spring instead of using two standard sized ones. All this is done in the name of cost-cutting. It’s not a right thing to do, especially if the door is quite heavy or big. Single spring will obviously break sooner than two springs. You need to pay attention to it from the very beginning, i.e. when you install the door in your home.
Like any other device, garage door track is subject to failure. Most common garage door problems can be prevented with a bit of maintenance. Making sure that the sensors are unblocked, and the sensor eyes kept clean will prevent the majority of problems. Periodic checks of all connection are also recommended.
